Dublin Custom House
Being over one thousand years old, the city of Dublin is steeped in history, and boasts many ancient sites of historical and cultural interest.
The Custom House Visitor Centre on Custom House Quay, Dublin 1 is one such place of interest. This impressive building was completed in 1791, and has played a role in the economic, political and social history of the city for over 200 years. The building was damaged by fire in 1921, but not all the interior features were ruined, and the Visitor Centre is located around the Dome Tower which escaped the blaze. At this centre, guests can enjoy the Gandon Museum (named after the building's architect James Gandon) where information about Gandon as well as the history of the Custom House itself and its many important occupants over the years is on display. Opening hours during the Summer months are 1000-1230hrs Monday to Friday and 1400-1700hrs at weekends. Between November and mid-March, the museum does not open on Monday, Tuesday and Saturday.
