Government Buildings Dublin-Irish Government Buildings
The seat of Government in Ireland is at Government Buildings, Upper Merrion St, Dublin 2. This is in the centre of the city, and well worth a visit. These imposing buildings were actually built by the British administration in Ireland in the early part of the twentieth century, and by a stroke of good fortune were completed in 1922 and available immediately for use by the new government of the Irish Free State. The interior has been recently refurbished and now accommodates the most senior Irish Governmental Offices including the Department of the Taoiseach (Prime Minister), the Department of Finance and the Office of the Attorney General. Guided tours of Government Buildings take place on Saturdays. Each tour last about 35 minutes and are free of charge. However, tickets must be obtained from the National Gallery (five minutes walk away at Merrion Square West & Clare Street) which opens at 1000hrs. The tours are at 1030, 1115, 1200 & 1245hrs. Being an active seat of Government, it can happen occasionally that the guided tours have to be cancelled at short notice.
