Kilmainham Gaol (jail) is a real eye-opener as to how it was for those unfortunate enough to be imprisoned in Dublin 200 years ago. Actually, though it began functioning as a jail in 1796, it remained operational until as recently as 1924. It is also of interest that Kilmainham is the largest unoccupied prison in the British Isles. It was to this jail that revered Irish patriots such as Robert Emmet & Charles Stewart Parnell as well as other leaders of the 1916 Rising were taken, and it is at this site that some of them met their death. Kilmainham Gaol is a must-see for visitors to Dublin. It is open from 0930-1700 daily during the Summer months, and from 0930-1600 Monday to Saturday & 1000-1700hrs on Sundays from October to March. Guided tours are offered, and admission is E5 for adults and E2 for students and children.
